Hydroxyethylcellulose (HEC) is a nonionic polymer thickener used to build viscosity and improve texture in water-based formulas.
It can form clear to slightly hazy gels depending on concentration and the full formula, and it gives a smooth, elegant slip compared to many gums.
HEC is widely used in serums, toners, gel cleansers, shampoos, and body wash systems to reduce runniness, improve suspension, and create a more premium feel.
The 150K grade is a mid-to-high viscosity option, making it a strong choice when you want noticeable thickening without a heavy gel feel.

FEATURES

  • Clear gel potential – can form clear gels with the right hydration and system design.
  • Smooth slip – improves glide and reduces drag in serums and gels.
  • Nonionic compatibility – performs well across many active systems and pH ranges.
  • Texture control – improves body and suspension without a waxy feel.

BEST FOR

  • Gel serums
  • Toners
  • Gel cleansers
  • Shampoos
  • Body wash
  • Suspension gels
Formulator tip: HEC needs proper dispersion to avoid clumps. Sprinkle slowly into vortexed water or pre-wet with glycerin, then allow time to fully hydrate before final viscosity decisions.

FORMULATION GUIDELINES

INCI Hydroxyethylcellulose
Type Nonionic cellulose thickener / rheology modifier
Grade 150K (mid-to-high viscosity)
Solubility Water dispersible (hydrates in water)
Use Rate 0.2–2.0% typical. 0.3–0.8% is common for serums and toners. 0.5–1.2% is common for gel cleansers and thicker gels.
Best Phase Water phase (add before surfactants and before cool down actives)
pH Compatibility Works across common skincare pH ranges. We recommend finished product pH 4.0–9.0 for stable viscosity.
Temperature Tolerance Stable under normal processing. Hydration can be done at room temperature or with gentle warming to speed up.
Pro Tip For clump-free hydration, pre-wet HEC with glycerin or propanediol, then add into water with good mixing.
Allow 20–60 minutes to fully hydrate before you judge final thickness.
In surfactant systems, add HEC before salt and before fragrance, because electrolytes and solvents can shift the final viscosity.
Appearance White to off-white powder
Stability Notes Viscosity can drop if over-sheared after full hydration. Avoid aggressive high shear once the gel is formed.
Storage Keep sealed, cool and dry. Protect from humidity.
