Fatty alcohol thickener that builds creamy body, slip, and stability in lotions, creams, and conditioners. Adds a smoother feel without drying the skin.
Cetyl Alcohol is a waxy fatty alcohol used to thicken and stabilise emulsions and improve texture.
It gives formulas a smoother, creamier feel, improves slip, and supports a more stable emulsion structure.
It is commonly used in lotions, creams, body butters, deodorant sticks, and hair conditioners to build structure and reduce “thin” or runny textures.
This is not a drying alcohol, it is a skin-friendly structuring ingredient.
FEATURES
- Builds viscosity – thickens emulsions and improves body.
- Improves stability – supports stronger emulsions and reduces separation risk.
- Better sensory – adds slip and a smoother, creamier feel.
- Versatile structuring – useful in skincare and haircare emulsions and sticks.
BEST FOR
- Lotions
- Creams
- Body butters
- Hair conditioners
- Hair masks
- Deodorant sticks
FORMULATION GUIDELINES
| INCI | Cetyl Alcohol |
|---|---|
| Type | Fatty alcohol (thickener / structuring agent / co-emulsifier) |
| Form | Flakes or pellets |
| Solubility | Oil soluble (melt-in) |
| Use Rate | 1–5% typical in lotions and creams. 2–8% common in conditioners and masks, depending on texture goal. |
| Best Phase | Oil phase (heat to melt) |
| pH Compatibility | Not pH dependent (structuring oil phase ingredient). pH N/A for anhydrous systems. |
| Temperature Tolerance | We recommend heating to 70–75°C to fully melt, then emulsify hot for best stability and texture. |
| Pro Tip | Use cetyl alcohol to build a smoother, more “cushiony” cream body and reduce thin texture. If the formula feels too waxy, reduce the percentage and balance with a lighter ester or a more fluid oil. Allow 24 hours after batching before final viscosity decisions, because fatty alcohol structure develops as it sets. |
| Appearance | White waxy flakes or pellets |
| Stability Notes | Texture depends on cooling profile and total oil phase. Avoid fast chilling if you want a smoother finish. |
| Storage | Keep sealed, cool, and dry. Protect from heat. |
