BHT
Oil soluble antioxidant that helps prevent rancidity and odour change in oils, butters, and anhydrous blends. Best for protecting oxidation-prone formulas.
DESCRIPTION
BHT (Butylated Hydroxytoluene) is a high efficiency antioxidant used to slow oxidation in oil based formulas.
It helps protect oils from going rancid, reduces odour change over time, and improves colour hold in oxidation prone blends.
BHT is used at very low levels and is most useful in anhydrous products such as body oils, face oils, balms, butters, and oil based serums.
FEATURES
- Prevents rancidity – slows oxidation in oils and butters.
- Improves odour hold – reduces “old oil” smell over time.
- Low dose performance – effective at very small percentages.
- Great for oil blends – supports long term stability in anhydrous systems.
BEST FOR
- Body oils
- Face oils
- Body butters
- Balms
- Lip products
- Oil serums
FORMULATION GUIDELINES
| INCI | BHT |
|---|---|
| Type | Antioxidant (oil phase stabiliser) |
| Solubility | Oil soluble |
| SAP Value | N/A (not a triglyceride oil) |
| Iodine Value | N/A (not an unsaturated oil) |
| Use Rate | 0.01–0.1% typical. 0.02–0.05% is often enough for oxidation control in most oil blends. |
| Best Phase | Oil phase / anhydrous base |
| pH Compatibility | Not pH dependent (oil phase ingredient). pH N/A for anhydrous systems. |
| Temperature Tolerance | Stable under normal processing. We recommend dissolving with gentle heat if needed, then adding below 60°C. |
| Pro Tip | Pre-dissolve BHT completely in your oil phase before adding sensitive colourants or fragrances. Use protective packaging and minimise headspace to reduce oxygen exposure. For very oxidation-prone blends, combine BHT with tocopherol for stronger long term stability. |
| Appearance | White crystalline powder |
| Stability Notes | Improves odour and colour stability by slowing oxidation. Best results come from combining antioxidant use with low-air, light-protective packaging. |
| Storage | Keep sealed, cool and dry, away from direct sunlight. |
