Description

Tween 20 is a nonionic surfactant used mainly as a solubiliser to disperse small amounts of oils into water based formulas.
It is commonly used to solubilise fragrance, essential oils, and oil soluble actives in toners, facial mists, sprays, and lightweight gels.
It can also support emulsification in some systems, but its best value is improving clarity and preventing oil separation when used correctly.

Formulator tip: Pre-mix Tween 20 with your fragrance or essential oil first, then add into water slowly. Adjust the ratio until the system stays clear and stable.

FORMULATION GUIDELINES

Solubility Water dispersible, oil dispersible (acts as a bridge between oil and water)
Use Rate 0.2–5.0% typical, based on oil load. The exact level depends on how much fragrance or essential oil you need to solubilise.
Best Use Solubilising fragrance, essential oils, and oil-soluble actives in water-based products
pH Compatibility Compatible across common cosmetic pH ranges. We recommend testing in your target pH for best clarity.
Temperature Tolerance Stable under normal processing. We recommend adding below 40–45°C when solubilising fragrance to reduce volatility.
Pro Tip Start with a solubiliser ratio of 2:1 to 6:1 (Tween 20 : oil/fragrance), then adjust based on clarity and stability.
If your toner hazes, increase Tween 20 slightly, reduce oil load, or switch to a different solubiliser system.
Add slowly with gentle mixing to reduce foaming, then allow the formula to rest so bubbles dissipate before final clarity check.
Appearance Clear to pale yellow viscous liquid
Stability Notes Overloading oils can cause haze or separation. Always test with your full fragrance, preservative, and packaging system.
Storage Keep sealed, cool and dry, away from direct sunlight.
