Tranexamic Acid – Ingredient Overview
Tranexamic Acid is a versatile topical active used to reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation, melasma, and post-inflammatory dark spots. It is valued for its anti-plasmin mechanism and anti-inflammatory properties, and formulators often include it in serums and lotions aimed at tone correction.
What research shows
Clinical reviews and randomized trials report that topical use reduces MASI scores and melanin indices, with many studies showing improvement after 8–12 weeks. As a result, clinicians often consider it a safe and effective option for mild to moderate pigmentation concerns. Moreover, it shows consistent performance when paired with daily sunscreen and other supportive actives.
Additionally, comparative work shows that topical delivery maintains efficacy without the systemic concerns linked to oral use. Furthermore, many formulations use barrier-supporting ingredients to enhance comfort and reduce irritation. Overall, these combinations support brighter, clearer-looking skin with continued use
Benefits
- Helps reduce the appearance of melasma and hyperpigmentation
- Supports a more even-looking complexion and reduces dark spots
- Anti-inflammatory action helps calm post-inflammatory discoloration
- Compatible with sunscreen, antioxidants, and other brightening actives
- Well tolerated in topical systems when used at recommended rates
Technical information
- INCI: Tranexamic Acid
- Solubility: Water-soluble; easily disperses in water, glycerin, and hydrophilic phases
- Usage rate: 2% – 5% for topical serums and creams (typical studies use ~2–5%)
- pH stability: Stable in pH 3.0–7.0; verify compatibility in complex systems
- Appearance: White crystalline powder
- Storage: Store in a cool, dry, dark environment
Formulation notes
TA dissolves readily in the water phase; for serums, pre-dissolve in glycerin or water at warm temperatures, then add to the cool-down phase to preserve actives. Always run stability and preservative efficacy testing. When combining with exfoliating acids or strong retinoids, sequence usage carefully to minimise irritation and ensure consistent results when using Tranexamic Acid in finished products.
