Shikimic Acid – Ingredient Overview
Shikimic Acid is a gentle exfoliating and clarifying active used to improve skin texture, refine pores, and help reduce congestion. Although milder than AHAs and BHAs, it offers effective smoothing benefits and supports visibly clearer skin with consistent use.
What research shows
Research highlights that Shikimic Acid works as a mild keratolytic agent that helps loosen buildup on the skin’s surface without the irritation commonly linked to stronger acids. As a result, it is often used in formulations for sensitive or reactive skin types that still need exfoliation. Additionally, its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory attributes make it suitable for blemish-prone skin.
Furthermore, several studies show that Shikimic Acid can support a brighter appearance by enhancing cell renewal and improving surface smoothness. In addition, it helps reduce the appearance of rough texture and supports better ingredient penetration in leave-on products such as lotions, serums, and toning solutions.
Benefits
- Gentle exfoliation suitable for sensitive skin
- Helps improve skin texture and clarity
- Reduces pore congestion and supports smoother appearance
- Provides mild brightening effects with consistent use
- Works well alongside niacinamide, PHA, and botanical extracts
Technical information
- INCI: Shikimic Acid
- Solubility: Water-soluble; dissolves easily in warm water
- Usage rate: 0.5% – 5% (common leave-on formulas use 0.5–2%)
- pH stability: Works best in pH 3.0–5.5 systems
- Appearance: Fine white powder
- Storage: Cool, dry, dark conditions
Formulation notes
Dissolve SHA in the water phase, ideally with gentle heat to help it disperse evenly. Next, incorporate it into toners, serums, lotions, and resurfacing gels. Because it is milder than glycolic or salicylic acid, formulators often use it in sensitive-skin exfoliators or in multi-acid systems for balanced performance. Finally, always test for stability and pH to maintain its exfoliating effectiveness.
