Pearlising and opacifying agent that gives shampoos and body washes that creamy, glossy “pearl” look. Also supports a richer texture and premium appearance.
Glycol Distearate is a pearlising and opacifying ingredient used in surfactant-based cleansers to create a creamy, pearly appearance.
It gives shampoos, shower gels, and liquid soaps a more premium look and can also improve the overall body and feel of the product.
It is typically added during heated processing so it can melt and then recrystallise as the batch cools, forming the pearl effect.
For best results, it is used with compatible surfactant blends and a controlled cooling process.
FEATURES
- Pearl effect – creates a glossy, creamy pearlescent look.
- Opacifies – reduces transparency for a richer visual finish.
- Premium sensory – supports a more luxurious feel in rinse-off formulas.
- Works in surfactants – designed for shampoos, body wash, and liquid cleansers.

FORMULATION GUIDELINES
| INCI | Glycol Distearate |
|---|---|
| Type | Pearlising agent + opacifier (surfactant system additive) |
| Solubility | Not water soluble. Disperses and melts into surfactant systems with heat. |
| Use Rate | 0.5–5.0% typical. 1–3% is common for a strong pearl effect. |
| ASM (Active Matter) | N/A (pearlising additive, not a cleansing surfactant) |
| CMC | N/A (pearlising additive, not a primary surfactant) |
| Best Phase | Surfactant phase (heat to melt) |
| pH Compatibility | Works across common cleanser pH ranges. We recommend finished product pH 5.0–6.5 for consumer rinse-off products. |
| Temperature Tolerance | We recommend heating the surfactant base to ~60–75°C to fully melt, then cooling with controlled mixing to form the pearl structure. |
| Pro Tip | Add glycol distearate into the surfactant base and heat until fully melted and uniform, then cool with moderate mixing. Pearl look develops as it cools, so avoid high shear during the cooling phase if you want a stronger pearl effect. If the cleanser becomes too thick or waxy, reduce the level or re-balance with a mild surfactant and adjust viscosity at the end. |
| Appearance | White to off-white flakes/pellets |
| Stability Notes | Pearl intensity depends on surfactant ratio, electrolyte level, fragrance load, and cooling profile. Test your full base early. |
| Storage | Keep sealed, cool and dry. Protect from heat and humidity. |
