BTMS 50 is a cationic conditioning emulsifier designed for hair conditioners, hair masks, and leave-in conditioning creams.
It delivers excellent detangling, softness, and reduced frizz, while also helping you build a stable, creamy emulsion with great slip.
BTMS 50 works best when combined with fatty alcohols and performance oils for a smoother, richer conditioning result.

FEATURES

  • Strong conditioning – improves slip, softness, and detangling.
  • Professional texture – builds creamy viscosity and stable emulsions.
  • Anti-frizz support – helps reduce frizz and improves manageability.
  • Easy to formulate – reliable emulsifier system for rinse-off hair products.

BEST FOR

  • Rinse-off conditioners
  • Hair masks
  • Leave-in conditioners
  • Co-washes
  • Conditioning creams
Formulator tip: Melt BTMS 50 fully in the oil phase with fatty alcohol, then emulsify hot. Conditioning builds as the formula cools and sets.

FORMULATION GUIDELINES

INCI Behentrimonium Methosulfate (and) Cetearyl Alcohol
Type Cationic conditioning emulsifier
Form Pellets / flakes
Solubility Oil phase melt-in emulsifier (not water soluble)
Use Rate 2–10% typical. 3–6% for conditioners, 5–10% for masks and richer treatments.
CMC N/A (conditioning emulsifier blend, not used as a primary cleansing surfactant)
ASM (Active Matter) N/A (not expressed as ASM in the same way as cleansing surfactants)
pH Compatibility We recommend finished product pH 4.0–5.5 for hair conditioning performance and scalp comfort.
Temperature Tolerance We recommend heating oil phase to 70–75°C to fully melt BTMS 50, then emulsify hot for best stability.
Pro Tip Pair BTMS 50 with cetyl alcohol or cetearyl alcohol to tune viscosity and improve slip.
Add heat-sensitive ingredients (preservative, fragrance, proteins, panthenol) in cool down below 40–45°C.
Avoid using BTMS 50 in anionic surfactant systems, because cationic + anionic incompatibility can cause instability or loss of conditioning feel.
Appearance Off-white pellets or flakes
Stability Notes Final viscosity develops during cool down. Allow 24 hours before making final viscosity adjustments.
Storage Keep sealed, cool and dry. Protect from humidity.
