Kojic Acid – Ingredient Overview
Kojic Acid is a well-known brightening ingredient used to reduce the appearance of dark spots, uneven tone, and hyperpigmentation. It inhibits melanin formation and is considered a gold-standard choice for pigmentation-focused cosmetic formulations.
What research shows
Scientific literature highlights Kojic Acid as an effective tyrosinase inhibitor that helps reduce visible discoloration when used consistently. As a result, many formulators use it in spot treatments, brightening serums, and body lotions targeting stubborn dark patches. Furthermore, research shows that combining it with other brightening actives improves overall performance while helping minimize irritation.
In addition, Kojic Acid offers antioxidant benefits, making it suitable for formulas aimed at improving luminosity and improving the look of dull skin. For best results, many formulations pair it with sunscreen, niacinamide, alpha arbutin, or tranexamic acid.
Benefits
- Helps reduce the appearance of hyperpigmentation and dark spots
- Supports a more even-looking complexion
- Works well in targeted serums and brightening systems
- Provides antioxidant effects that support skin radiance
- Pairs effectively with niacinamide, alpha arbutin, and tranexamic acid
Technical information
- INCI: Kojic Acid
- Solubility: Water-soluble; dissolves best in warm water or propanediol
- Usage rate: 1% – 3% (face); up to 4% for body formulas
- pH stability: Best in pH 3.0 – 5.0
- Temperature: Keep below 60°C to prevent oxidation
- Appearance: Fine off-white crystalline powder
- Storage: Cool, dry, dark conditions; protect from moisture
Phase & formulation notes
Add Kojic Acid to Cool Phase A (water phase) and dissolve with gentle heat. Avoid temperatures above 60°C to reduce the risk of darkening. Next, adjust the pH of your final formula to remain within the ideal range to support stability. Finally, combine it with chelators (such as sodium citrate or EDTA) to help prevent discoloration during storage.
Preservative pairing
- Phenoxyethanol + Ethylhexylglycerin (best for pH 4–6)
- Sodium Benzoate + Potassium Sorbate (only if pH stays ≤ 5.0)
- EDTA recommended to reduce oxidation and browning
Suitable for
- Brightening serums
- Spot treatments
- Face creams and lotions
- Body brightening formulas
- Essences and toners
- NOT suitable for anhydrous formulas (requires water)

Activated Resorcinol (4-BR) is a strong tyrosinase and peroxidase inhibitor. 4-BR works very well against hyperpigmentation including more complex pigmentation such as melasma. In more recent studies, 4-BR has proved effective in even rinse-off products – 4-Butylresorcinol was added to both liquid and solid soap formulations and showed significant lightening effects after only a few weeks of treatment
